  AgriTourism Events at Foxfire Holler

Summer 2010

This summer we will be hosting several events ... Y'all are welcome to come out and visit with the animals (and us !) and spend the day having fun on the farm... Dates will be announced closer to the actual event, because some things are just impossible to plan ahead ! I will be announcing events on Facebook ( Spin A Yarn is our user name, add us ! ) Ravelry, and the email newsletter.. you can subscribe to the newsletter by clicking on the newsletter link to the left of this page.

  • Shearing Day ... This is my favorite day on the farm! A big day for any sheep farmer, it is the harvesting of the wool crop for the year! We also vaccinate, deworm and trim hooves if needed ... The event is a potluck, Mama usually fixes a couple big Shepherd's pies, everyone brings a bite of something, and we all dig in.. You are welcome to help or just hang out and watch ! Lynn Worth and Eddie Bakeburg have volunteered to provide music. Good party !
  •
  • High Country Farm Tour August 7-8 ... A whole weekend of visiting awesome farms ! We will have Fiber Demonstrations here, classes available if you call ahead... you can tour our permaculture gardens, pet some sheep, bunnies, chickens and pigs .. Maybe even take one or 2 home with you! We are totally kid friendly here, and I can guarantee they will have a ball .
  •
  • Old Time Corn Shuckin' ... We will be having an evening of shucking corn, listenin to music and sittin by the fire : ) I won't know a date til the corn gets ready ... Probably around the end of October .
  •
  • Chicken Harvest day ... If you want to learn how to process your own birds for resale, eatin, or you just want to see where your food comes from... You're welcome to come out and help !

  Blue Ridge Fiber Guild

August Preview and July Summary

Hello Fiber Lovers -

The guild-sponsored Hat Felting Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, August 22 from 10 am to 3 pm. Jane and Ivy Campbell, both Guild members, will be your instructors. The cost of the workshop is $20 for guild members and $30 for non-members. This fee includes all necessary materials except for an additional cost for the wool fiber, if purchased (see below).

Marino wool is recommended. Participants can purchase fiber from Miss Babs (guild member Babs Ausherman) on the day of the workshop for $10 or they can supply their own; four ounces are recommended. (See her complete selection of fiber and yarn online at http://www.missbabs.com.) A choice of two hat designs is possible: beret or rolled brim. Some supplies are needed by each participants during the felting process. Please bring to the workshop: a hat form or bowl, to shape the finished hat (approximately the size of your head); scissors; paper and pencil; cloth tape measure; 2 or 3 bath towels; sponges; a small bowl or cup, for grey water; and a travel mug or thermos, for hot, soapy water.

Remember to bring a bag lunch and do wear comfortable shoes, as you will be standing a lot.

We look forward to participating ourselves and hope a number of you will join us. Register for the workshop at the upcoming Guild meeting on August 20 or with Toni Wait at the Center. Registration deadline is Friday, August 21. Thanks to Jane and Ivy for their willingness to show us this interesting and useful technique.
