Farm Raised & Naturally Grown

I know it's kind of odd... the yarn store that sells meat, right... But the store grew out of our passions, raising sheep, goats and cattle; Spinning.. weaving.. knitting, teaching... Somehow it all merged together to form a business... So here is the lowdown on the meats, we raise lamb.both for wool and meat, naturally, with as little human interference as possible. We do vaccinate and deworm because we believe it is important for the health of the ewe, and we do feed our ewes grain.. they have to have it for energy in the winter when they are gestating and lactating. otherwise we are grassfed and natural as it is possible to be. We practice pasture rotation, and other sustainable techniques. Foxfire Holler Farm has never and will never use hormones, synthetic fertilizers, or routine antibiotics.

Because we can't possibly, nor do we desire to, meet the demand for natural meats all by ourselves, we buy animals on the hoof from other local likeminded farmers. We offer lamb, beef, pork, rabbit and occasionally poultry. We haul the animals straight from their home pasture, humanely and safely, straight down to Taylorsville to May's Meats. The animals are slaughtered in as stressfree environment as is possible. May's makes our sausage and and packages all of our meats to our specifications. The meat is of course slaughtered and packaged under strict USDA inspection. *** LINK HERE TO PRICELIST???****

  • FAQs about our meat:
  • Do you slaughter it yourself? No, all our work is done at Mays Meats in Taylorsville NC under USDA inspection
  • Do you raise all the animals yourself? No we don't ... Nor do we haul them to our farm for the requisite 3 months so that we can say they are ours. We believe it is healthier and more humane for the animal to come straight from it's home pasture. We do raise most of the lambs, but not all.
  • Where is your meat raised? Right here in Ashe County by farmers who are still doing things the old fashioned way!
  • Are the rabbits free range ? No ... so far as I know pastured rabbit has not been successfully mastered, I could be wrong here.
  • Why don't you have meat at certain times of the year? There is a reason that fall is traditionally slaughter time. Natural farmers breed their animals to give birth in the winter and early spring, that way they are grown to slaughter size in the fall. Late spring and summer slaughter animals are going to have been grained and hayed over winter so that they can stay warm and keep growing. Since certified organic grains are so expensive, inaccessable, and it IS still grain, you would not have the same quality product that you are accustomed to receiving from Foxfire Holler Farm and Spin A Yarn. To everything there is a season...
